Researchers bypass Apple Activation Lock on iOS 10.1.1

Image
Activation Lock is an iOS feature that everyone hopes they won't have to use. It was introduced with iOS 7 and it allows users to remotely lock their device, in case it's stolen or misplaced. If someone wants to use the device afterwards, they will have to connect it to a Wi-Fi network and provide the Apple ID and password that were used to lock it. Back in October, Hemanth Joseph, a security researcher, managed to crack through Activation Lock on an iPad by entering extremely long strings of characters in all fields of the Wi-Fi setup. This made iOS freeze and, when combined with opening and closing of the iPad's Smart Cover, gave Joseph access to the device's home screen. Allegedly, the loophole was later fixed by Apple with the release of iOS 10.1.1, but another researcher proved otherwise. Benjamin Kunz Mejri of Vulnerability Lab managed to recreate the issue by tweaking the method a little bit. In addition to using the Smart Cover, he utilized scree

Guardians of the Galaxy by TellTale Games officially confirmed for 2017

Image
Last month we reported that  TellTale Games might be making a Guardians of the Galaxy game . And since it was just a rumor, we kept our fingers crossed, eagerly waiting for an official confirmation. And confirmed it was, fellow mobile gamers. Yesterday, at the stage of The Game Awards, TellTale showed us a tiny teaser, featuring Star-Lord's iconic portable tape player slowly drifting through space. The game will be an episodic title with the first episode launching next year for PC, consoles and mobile devices. “In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot’s seat in directing their escapades around the universe,”  said Kevin Bruner, Co-Founder and CEO of TellTale Games. With more successful interactive story titles than you can shake a Hadron Enforcer at, TellTale Games is certainly a good choice for Marvel to entrust a franchise with such a deep story. So, we

The OLED iPhone 8 said to use Samsung Display suppliers' circuit boards, 70 million units may be shipped

Image
In case we needed another tangential evidence to learn that an iPhone 8 model with OLED display is in store, here comes a report from Korean media that a flexible printed circuit board made by Samsung Display suppliers will be making its way in Apple's handset next year. Korean parts suppliers Interflex and BH are already scaling production, says the report, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics may soon be joining them.  All three are Samsung Display suppliers, indicating that these " flexible printed circuit boards " are most likely the display controllers, as Samsung is rumored to provide the bulk of the OLED screens for next year's iPhone. About 60 to 70 million of the boards are expected to be needed in total next year, and the first shipments are likely to start in Q2 2017, after all parts are assembled in Samsung's OLED display factory in Vietnam.  Where there's smoke, there is fire, so given that Samsung is now rumored to supply both the flexible s

MediaTek introduces the Helio X23 and Helio X27 chipsets; both carry deca-core CPUs

Image
MediaTek announced today two new chipsets for its high powered Helio X2x line. The Helio X23 and Helio X27 both feature a deca-core CPU that is created using MediaTek's tri-cluster setup. Both come with two high powered Cortex A-72 cores and two sets of four low powered Cortex-A53 cores. The CPU on the Helio X27 chipset features a 2.6GHz clock speed compared with a slower 2.5GHz clock speed on the Helio X25 SoC. The new Helio X23 SoC and Helio X27 SoC both support dual camera setups, something that we are seeing more and more of in MediaTek's main markets. Speaking of photography, MediaTek's Imagiq image signal-processing solution will "integrate color and mono cameras and depth-of-field applications into a single ISP aimed at both quality and functionality for photography." The Huawei P9, for example, has a dual camera setup on its back that uses one color camera and one that shoots in monochrome. The pictures come out looking sharper this way. Bo
